I built this site for a single, purely selfish reason:
I like helping people.
I was the Boy Scout who enjoyed helping little old ladies cross the road
simply because it cost me nothing and felt good.
I build Stupid Damn Computer because I know how to work on computers, and other people don't.
It costs me nothing, and I get e-mails telling me thank you that make me feel good.
I have avoided putting paid services on this web site, because I don't want to be one of those smarmy internet marketers. This site makes enough money off the ads to keep it afloat and spring for breakfast at Denny's for me and my wife every once in a while, so I'm good.
All along I thought I was putting my visitor's needs first on this site,
but someone asked something me the other day that bothered the heck out of me.
"What I do for my visitors that do not find the help they need?"
He asked why I don't have some resources for those times when my visitors can't do it
themselves and still need someone they can trust to fix their problem.
Finding honest computer repair service is a problem that I have not addressed until now,
because I want SDC to be free for it's visitors.
To be honest, it never even occurred to me that someone might want,
much less actually trust my recommendation.
(and I don't want to be a smarmy internet marketer!! REALLY!!)
Finally, I relented and added an online service to the computer clean-out procedure page to help people when they need it. The response has been positive, and suddenly I am one of those smarmy internet marketers after all. (DAMN!! I HATE when that happens.)
But I feel sullied, and I cannot bring myself to prostitute Stupid Damn Computer any further.
(The service helps my visitors, so I am leaving it, but I feel so dirty.)
So I decided to put these resources I trust on a different web site.
This way, I can feel unsullied when I work on SDC, and only feel like a
slimy internet marketer when I work on the other site.
